Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales has visited St Stephen’s Primary School in Upton Park to congratulate head teacher Jane Johnson on her recent OBE. Ms Johnson received the award for her services to education in the New Year’s Honours list. She has been teaching in the borough since 1973 and at St Stephens since 1983. The Mayor visited the school last week where he enjoyed a tour from the school council and a special assembly where he presented flowers to Jane and offered his congratulations. He said “As one of the youngest borough’s in the UK education is vitally important for ensuring a bright future for our young people. “It’s people like Jane, who are willing to put in the extra effort, that make a wonderful contribution to so many children’s lives. “I’m delighted that all her tremendous work has been acknowledged in such a public way and I offer my congratulations on behalf of everyone at Newham Council.” Jane said: “Teaching in Newham has been such a big part of my life and it’s wonderful to be recognised for doing a job I truly love. “This award would not have been possible without such a committed community and exceptional school staff over the many years.”
