Green Street skills fair
Sir Robin Wales joined residents at the Priory Park Centre for a skills fair to find out more about making a start in the world of work. Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen and Deputy Young Mayor Aadilah Ismail were also on hand to meet young residents and discuss careers and training plans for the future. The event, organised by the council's Green Street Community Forum, Newham Workplace, Newceys and Newham Volunteers, showcased a range of opportunities available. Representatives from Connexions, Job Centre Plus and Westfield were on hand to offer residents with professional career advice, including interview skills and help on writing CVs. People were also given the opportunity to find out about a selection of current employment opportunities. Sir Robin said: "As a borough we are committed to supporting residents into work and increasing the number of training and learning opportunities for adults and young people. "Newham is a place of rapid progress and we want to ensure that our residents benefit from this through job and training opportunities." Young Mayor Kaycee de Belen said: "Making the transition into work can be daunting for young people. "Events like this make us more informed about how to get a job and give us the skills and confidence to make a start in the workforce." Visitors to the fair were also given advice on projecting a positive image for interviews. Children were kept entertained with face painting and kite making workshops.
