Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, has announced a new initiative to improve the regeneration process.

Newham Council is seeking to establish a regeneration company in partnership with a private sector organisation.

Sir Robin said: “When I was re-elected in 2006 I pledged that the council would use assets to promote developments that local people want and need.

The creation of this company will result in the regeneration of selected sites for the benefit of local people, as well as bringing long term financial return into Newham.”

Sites throughout the borough have been selected for regeneration including several council premises which will be left vacant after the relocation of the council’s back office staff to Building 1000, Royal Docks.

The multi-million pound project is expected to run for a minimum of 15 years.

It is anticipated that the company will work on council-owned sites and purchase land owned by third parties for regeneration.

Added the Mayor: “The range of developments overseen by this company will be broad and will include affordable housing, commercial and healthcare premises.

“I am looking forward to working with a partner who shares our vision to ensure that Newham will be a place where people choose to live, work and stay.”
